The municipality of San Roque has more than 160 different catering establishments (restaurants, bars, cafeterias and pubs) scattered around the numerous villages of its extensive territory that covers 145 km2.

San Roque, a journey through the best gastronomy in the world

The ancient Carthaginian and Roman city of Carteia (founded by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC) was recognised by Rome as one of the most important producers of “garum”, a delicacy made with salted fish that has become a symbol of the Roman Empire.

Later, in the Muslim era and the time of the discovery of the Americas, many new ingredients and spices were introduced that greatly enriched the cuisine of the Old World and left their mark on Andalusian cuisine.

Today, the best of the sea and land come together in San Roque, a large and unique municipality with an extensive coastline and large expanses of hills and mountains inland. All this historical and culinary legacy is due to its geographical location and the plurality of its people between two seas and two continents.

The top quality raw materials are essential, fish and shellfish: clams, tuna, sea bream, anchovies, shrimp, dogfish, squid, baby squid, swordfish, octopus and much more. Meats such as Iberian ham, venison, caña de lomo or oxtail also stand out, always accompanied by succulent vegetables, legumes, vegetables and fruits that make your mouth water.
