Horse enthusiasts will find a wide range of places and activities to enjoy these magnificent animals. Attending a polo match is one of the most pleasurable and entertaining days out as a new experience.

Polo is a sport that is played by two teams with four players in each one, on horseback, who try to score a goal by hitting a boccie ball with a long-handled mallet between the rival team’s goal, comprised of two cane goalposts. The objective is to score the highest number of goals.

It is a very historical sport in the borough of San Roque and the Gibraltar Area, due to the fact the Gibraltar Garrison Polo Club used a polo ground in the village of Campamento from the mid 19th century until 1934. There was also a horse racing track and a golf course here.

In 1965 the first polo ground in Sotogrande was built, the mythical polo field by the beach, coinciding with the foundation of this resort. In 1971 the famous Sotogrande Gold Cup was played for the first time. At present the municipality has 10 polo grounds, 7 owned by Santa Maria Polo Club and 3 by Ayala Polo Club.
